A very typical Malay wedding will begin with the engagement ceremony. On the engagement day the bridegroom family brings the items agreed upon. The bridegroom's representative will hand over all the "hantaran" (gifts) items with the exception of the engagement ring. The ring will be placed on the finger of the bride by a member of the groom, signifying that she's engaged to the owner of the ring. The bride will all this while be in her chamber.
"Hantaran" Gifts


The purpose of the engagement ceremony is to inform that the girl is now attached to someone. And it's in this ceremony that the two families (the bride and the bridegroom) will discuss about the wedding plans. The groom family will then informed the bride's family about the engagement period . Normally the duration of engagement will varies from 3 months to 3 years, depending on the groom and the bride on how prepared they are; financially, physically and mentally to get settled.
During the ceremony, the groom's family will mention the "wang hantaran" (dowry) that the groom is giving to the bride on the solemnize day. Normally the "wang hantaran" is being set by the bride's family upon agreement from the groom's family.This amount varies from $5,000 to $15,000.
It's a tradition in the Malay society to exchange gifts (hantaran) between the two families and these gifts comes in many forms like cakes, clothes, fruits and etc.
