Reciting the wedding vows - recited after the "kadhi" infront of the "wali" and the 2 witnesses.
A verbal and written agreement to marry is made between the groom and the "wali" , the lawful guardian. At times the marriage solemnization is in fact done by the bride's father in the presence of religious officials.
Signing of marriage certificate
In a brief sermon given by the officals, the bridegroom and the bride will receive a briefing on their rights and responsibilities as a married couple, particularly from the Islamic perspective. The groom is also reminded that, should he fail to provide both spiritual and physical sustenance for his wife, the marriage can be dissolved under the laws of the Syariah Court. There must be 2 offical witnesses at the "Akad Nikah" . Conventionally, a small sum of money known as "mas kahwin" seals the contract.
To further complete the ceremony, the "mas kahwin" is offically handed over to the bride.
After receiving the "mas kahwin" and as an appreciation of thanks the bride, now offically the wife kisses the hand of the groom, now the husband.
One needs to distinguish the "mas kahwin" and the "wang hantaran" (dowry). The small sum of the "mas kahwin" is to ensure that even poor people could marry, for marriage is encouraged for all healthy Muslims. Often the "mas kahwin" takes the form of both cash, jewellery or clothing. The "wang hantaran" on the other hand may go into thousands of dollars.
A marriage certificate will be issued by the "kadhi" or State Religion Council representatives following the ceremony, and this is to be signed by the bridegroom, the bride as well as the withness.
The "upacara akad nikah" (solemnization) often takes place at the bride's place. The "Akad Nikah" ceremony is a family affair, attended by relatives, close friends and guests.
